The Spiritual Successor to Final Fantasy Tactics

Yasumi Matsuno, the creator of the revered Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story roleplaying games, has joined a new tactical RPG project titled Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians. It is already looking to be the first true spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics, which should be exciting news for any fan of tactical RPGs.

The Kickstarter campaign for the game has only just started, and has already gained half of its $600,000 goal. This is not surprising, considering the pedigree of those involved. Not only has Matsuno joined the team, but his longtime collaborator, composer Hitoshi Sakimoto, has also signed on. Sakimoto has created amazing soundtracks for games such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII, and Tactics Ogre.

The game is being developed by Playdek, a company who has released many digital versions of popular tactical board games, such as Summoner Wars. Their games have always had a high level of polish and quality, but they have been far smaller in scope. It is hard to say whether they can handle a full-size game release such as this, but it is reassuring to know that they’ve convinced Matsuno and Sakimoto that they can.

If a modern take on the classic gameplay from Final Fantasy Tactics sounds like a dream come true, you should head over to their Kickstarter page now and pledge your support.
